Add each separately rated condition. The calculator will combine them using the VA's Combined Ratings Table (38 CFR § 4.25) — ratings are not simply added. Mark conditions as "bilateral" if they affect paired body parts (e.g., both knees, both arms) for the 10% bilateral factor.

Combined Rating: (rounded to nearest 10%)

Dependents only affect compensation at a 30% rating or higher. At 10% and 20%, a flat rate applies regardless of dependents.

Please add at least one disability with a rating greater than 0%.

How "VA Math" Works (38 CFR § 4.25)

VA combined ratings are not simple addition. The VA assumes each disability acts on the remaining efficiency of the veteran. Ratings are sorted highest-to-lowest, then combined sequentially using:

Combined % = 100% − (Remaining Efficiency)

For example, ratings of 50%, 30%, and 20% combine as: 100 − (50% × 70% × 80%) = 100 − 28 = 72%, which rounds up to 70%. The result is always rounded to the nearest 10%. A bilateral factor of 10% is added for paired body parts before final rounding.

Important Notice: This calculator provides estimates based on the official 2026 VA compensation rate tables (effective December 1, 2025) and the combined ratings formula in 38 CFR § 4.25. Actual VA determinations depend on the specific diagnostic codes assigned, evidence of record, and adjudication of dependents. The bilateral factor application here is a simplified model — the VA's actual calculation processes paired conditions in a specific order before combining.
